Five-Year Combined Degree Program
A major in Educational Foundations, together with the M.A. in Educational Innovation, prepare one to be a highly effective teacher in public and private schools nationwide. It prepares you in an approach to teaching which combines the Consciousness-Based approach with the best evidence-based practice from contemporary teaching and curriculum development.
In the Consciousness-Based approach you will learn how to connect every part of knowledge to the whole of knowledge and the whole of knowledge to the deepest levels of the students’ experience. Through best practice in contemporary education, you will learn how to support high levels of academic achievement. Together the two areas of knowledge will help you as a teacher create a classroom with meaningful learning, low stress and high achievement.
This program requires five years of full time study, leading to a B.A. in Educational Foundations and an M.A. in Educational Innovation. Successful completion of the program also leads to an Iowa teaching license. Candidates must also complete a second major in a teaching field (art, literature, mathematics, physiology and health, sustainable living, or business) during their undergraduate years to be prepared for the M.A. This program provides the strongest possible preparation in your subject, as it includes a year of coursework, plus a full year of student teaching in two different locations, in only five years.
As an alternative, candidates may want to consider also completing a bachelor’s degree in one’s teaching field, followed by the M.A. in Educational Innovation, though this alternative takes an additional semester as part of the M.A.
The University’s teacher education programs are approved by the State of Iowa and incorporate all regional and national standards. They also provide a thorough training in the principles and practices of Consciousness-Based education.
