M.A. in Educational Innovation
Licensure
In order to teach at any level in public and many private schools you will need a license to teach, also called in some states a “certificate.” The license or certificate is each state’s way of ensuring that the people put in charge of teaching its youth are qualified to do so.
Each state has its own requirements for what is needed to obtain its license, and you may find the requirements for teaching in any state on its website. See a complete listing of requirements for a teaching license.
In addition to a license, each candidate must be “endorsed” to teach a certain subject at a certain level. Each license must include at least one endorsement and may contain multiple endorsements.
For example, one might have an endorsement in secondary English (grades 5-12), and one might also have a second endorsement in mathematics (5-12). In this case, one would be licensed to teach either English or mathematics at the middle or secondary level.
If you are contemplating a career in teaching, please consult the MUM Education Department early in order to plan together meeting the state and program requirements for the license.
