Creating a Legacy
A bequest or provision in a trust can take a variety of forms. It can be:
- Pecuniary — a specific amount of money
- Specific — a particular asset, a painting, building, or stock
- Contingent — if your other beneficiaries do not survive you
- Residuary — a percentage or all of your estate not designated for other beneficiaries
Sample bequest language
Many people have asked for bequest language, so we are including a sample below.
"I hereby give, devise, and bequeath to Maharishi University of Management, Fairfield, Iowa,
[the sum of _____________ dollars] /
[ _________ shares of ___________ ] /
[___% of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate]
to be used for general purposes."
If you wish to designate a particular purpose for your bequest, please consider granting the University the authority to respond to changing needs by including a clause like this:
"If, in the future, it is the opinion of the Board of Trustees of Maharishi University of Management that all or part of this bequest cannot be usefully applied to such purpose, it may be used for any related purpose by the University or other charitable organization which in the opinion of the Board of Trustees will most nearly accomplish my wishes."
