Family Legacies

William and Winifred Sinden

Sindens

We would like to share with you a wonderful way we found to benefit the University. It is remarkably easy and provides financial support for us as well as Maharishi University of Management.

In the early '70s we purchased 100 shares of Wal-Mart stock for approximately $4,000. By the early 1990s, our 100 shares had grown to 1,600 shares valued at approximately $40,000.

At this time, it was clear that Wal-Mart’s remarkable growth had ended and it would have been great to liquidate our investment and re-invest. If we had sold the stock, however, we would have paid more than $12,000 in capital gains tax and would have lost a significant portion of that appreciation in value.

On the other hand, we did not feel that we could afford to make an outright gift to a charitable institution, for two reasons: our assets were not large, and we had to consider the needs of our family. We have three daughters who each had some financial need.

Remainder Trust

We had several discussions with our investment advisor concerning the advisability of a remainder trust in our situation. Soon after the trust was established, we decided with our financial manager and the approval of the trustees to sell the Wal-Mart stock and re-invest it. Of course there were no tax consequences, either for us or the University. We've received substantial payments each year, for a total over three years of more than $11,000.

We have used this income for our living expenses and even reinvested some of it, which has allowed us to increase our estate for our children. The Federal Government, through the IRS, very attentively regulates the operation of these trusts.

If you would like to support Maharishi University of Management and its goals, this is a wonderful way to do it.

Arthur and Christina Granville

Granvilles

Arthur and Christina Granville had the great good fortune to meet Maharishi when he first came to America and the wisdom to appreciate what he was offering to the world. In 1959, few Americans had any idea what consciousness was, and the pursuit of enlightenment was rarer still. The Granvilles had long been spiritual seekers when they attended the first series of lectures Maharishi gave in the United States. They remained devoted to Maharishi and the spiritual regeneration of the world for the rest of their 90 plus years.

In addition, the Granvilles helped Maharishi complete his translation and commentary of the Bhagavad-Gita at Lake Tahoe and Lake Arrowhead in 1964. All of us in the United States, together with everyone in the world, owe a great debt to the Granvilles and to the rare and wise people of their generation who embraced Maharishi’s teaching and made it possible for his teaching to reach us, changing our lives and transforming the world.

We at Maharishi University of Management are proud that Mr. Granville was a member of our Board of Trustees from July 1987 until the time of his passing. One of the main roads on campus, Granville Avenue, is named in honor of the Granvilles. Consistent with their generous life of devotion to Maharishi’s teaching, they left their estate of over $650,000 to the University, as a legacy to insure that future generations would also have the benefit of this supreme knowledge. While this gift from the Granvilles was very substantial, we are deeply appreciative of bequests of any size.

Leaving a bequest to the University in your will is one of many ways to incorporate the University in your long-term charitable giving. You might benefit from establishing a charitable remainder trust or charitable lead trust. The University may also be named as a beneficiary of an insurance policy, IRA or pension plan.
