Around the Town
When you go off campus, you will find resources and places of interest ordinarily found in much larger cities — and some which are not found anywhere else at all. Here is a brief list of the highlights of our campus community:
Less than one mile from campus is one of the leading organic and natural food groceries in the Midwest. Natural and vegetarian cuisine is available in less than ten minutes’ drive from campus in surprisingly delicious international styles. These include Italian, Indian, Thai, Mexican, Middle Eastern, Chinese, and gourmet French, as well as traditional American. Some also offer gourmet coffee, reading, and entertainment.
In downtown Fairfield, Iowa you can also find fine quality organic clothing and bedding, natural health and personal care products, and a wide variety of unique gift items. The Health and Wholeness Store provides health and personal care items, as a retailer for Maharishi Ayurveda Products International.
Iowa City, home of the University of Iowa, is one hour to the north and a favorite getaway spot on weekends. Shopping trips are organized by the student activities office.
Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment, which offers Consciousness-Based education to boys and girls in grades K–12, is located on the campus of the University. With an open enrollment policy and a student body from a broad socioeconomic background, grades 9–12 consistently score in the 99th percentile on standardized tests year after year, and over the past five years the school has averaged about ten times the national average for National Merit Scholar Finalists.
Maharishi Vedic City is a few miles north of campus, the first new city incorporated in Iowa in 19 years. In architecture, holistic health care, organic agriculture, and education, the city is applying Vedic knowledge to promote health, happiness, and high quality of life.
The city hosts The Raj Ayurveda Health Spa, which offers rejuvenation therapies to treatments that address chronic disorders.
