Maharishi’s Yoga: The Royal Path to Enlightenment by William Sands

Dr. William Sands Publishes Article on Maharishi’s Yoga

Maharishi Vedic ScienceSM professor William Sands recently published an article in the online magazine Elephantjournal. Titled “A Different Take on Asthanga Yoga,” the article compares the common understanding of Asthanga Yoga with Maharishi’s interpretation.

“In Maharishi’s view, Ashtanga Yoga, as described by Patanjali, is not a practice for experiencing Yoga, it is a detailed and comprehensive description of the eight fundamental characteristics of the state of Yoga,” writes Dr. Sands. “In this sense, it is more a philosophical description than a practical guide.”

The article is based on Dr. Sands’ 2013 book Maharishi’s Yoga: The Royal Path to Enlightenment published by MUM Press. The book explores Maharishi’s teaching on Yoga philosophy from several perspectives, including its profound practical benefits for individuals and societies. It also considers traditional areas of Yoga philosophy, such as siddhi performance, Karma Yoga, Gyan Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, and the fulfillment of the four traditional goals of human life: dharma, artha, kama, and moksha.

Maharishi explains that stretching exercises and Yoga postures play an important role in culturing the physiology and preparing it for our inward dive. They are part of what we could call the path of Yoga. But to experience the state of Yoga deep within, we must transcend.

“Maharishi’s Transcendental Meditation technique is the natural and effortless way to experience the bliss within, and to bring this infinite intelligence to every phase of life so that we can enjoy more, become more successful and productive, and ultimately live the total potential of human life in higher states of consciousness,” said Dr. Sands.

Dr. Sands’ book provides a systematic, logical examination of Maharishi’s Yoga and its powerful conclusion: that the goals of Yoga — from inner peace to full enlightenment — can be effortlessly achieved.

“Students in the MUM College of Maharishi Vedic Science study the field of consciousness, the self-referral basis of individual and collective life,” said Dr. Sands. “Every day they dive deeply into their own Self through their Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi practice, and then in class they investigate the full range of Maharishi Vedic Science, gaining a theoretical understanding of this profound knowledge of life. Interest in our BS, MA, and PhD programs has grown enormously over the last few years, with many students enrolling in these programs shortly after learning the Transcendental Meditation technique, eager to find out more about this fascinating and engaging field of study.”
