Patrik Siljestam – Working on MUM’s Strategic Plan
MUM student Patrik Siljestam grew up in Skokloster near Stockholm, Sweden, in an ideal village where 100 people practice the Transcendental Meditation® technique.
Patrik has been playing music since the age of six, so after high school he decided to study music theory. However, he didn’t feel a deep connection with his fellow students and teachers. After his first year, he left school and went to Africa as a volunteer.
He spent 9 months in Malawi helping preschool teachers adopt modern educational methods. He also helped build a schoolhouse and taught for three months in an elementary school.
In Africa, he realized he needed to study to be able to make a bigger difference, so in 2009 he enrolled at MUM. Patrik studied business and graduated as Valedictorian in 2011. He is currently pursuing a part-time MBA while working full time as assistant strategic planner in the Office of Expansion.
“The best part about MUM is that they give you the time and space to do your TM-Sidhi program regularly,” said Patrik. “Even now that I have a full-time job and I am a part-time student, I still have time to do my program.”
Patrik’s job is to synthesize and analyze data for MUM’s 5-year strategic plan, as well as to monitor the progress and update the plan as needed. “I get to work with the whole University,” he said. “The goal for the plan is to be lively in everyone’s consciousness, so that it is more than just a document.” After completing his MBA, Patrik plans to pursue a PhD in management at MUM.
“Patrik has been a real pleasure to work with, and he's already made an exceptional contribution to the short- and long-term planning for MUM's expansion,” said David Todt, vice president of expansion. “Everyone from the Board of Trustees to The Higher Learning Commission (MUM’s accrediting association) will see the work that Patrik’s done – expressing the vision of where MUM is going in the next five to thirty years. Not a bad accomplishment for a young business graduate.” View five-year vision and goals.
In his free time, Patrik likes to play music. He has performed at numerous venues at MUM and in Fairfield. Now he is focusing on writing and recording his owns songs which he shares on his website.
