MUM Dedicates Eyre Tennis Center

On June 6, 2012, Maharishi University of Management and Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment dedicated the Eyre Tennis Center at MUM to honor legendary tennis coaches Laurie and Lawrence Eyre. The Eyre Tennis Center comprises four indoor courts in the MUM Recreation Center.

Recognizing 25 years of tennis coaching excellence, the naming ceremony highlighted the achievements of Laurie and Lawrence Eyre. Speaking at the dedication were former members of the School’s tennis teams, appreciative parents, state tennis officials, Fairfield mayor Ed Malloy, and administrators from Maharishi School and MUM.

The achievements for the girls’ coach, Laurie Eyre, included two “final fours” in state-level tennis tournaments and one singles state champion. Lawrence Eyre, who coached the boys, saw his players win 16 state championships (7 singles, 5 doubles, and 4 team championships) as well as 15 “final fours.”

For two years in a row, 1999 and 2000, the Maharishi School boys’ team won the celebrated Triple Crown, capturing Iowa’s singles, doubles, and team tennis titles (Iowa Class 1-A) — the first school in Iowa history to win two Triple Crowns. Only one other school had won the Triple Crown once.

“What you brought to the city of Fairfield is a sense of pride,” said Mayor Ed Malloy.

MUM Executive Vice-President Dr. Craig Pearson praised the Eyers as founding faculty of Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment, having joined Maharishi School when it was founded in 1980 — and now, 32 years later, several hundred thousand students around the world are receiving the benefits of Consciousness-BasedSM education. Maharishi School, Dr. Pearson observed, was the pioneer and has been the continuing inspiration for all these other schools, and Lawrence and Laurie Eyre, along with the other faculty, have left a legacy that is spreading globally and will transform the world.

Lawrence Eyre will leave Maharishi School to work for the International Foundation of Consciousness-Based Education, traveling the world to lecture and expand the number of schools utilizing Consciousness-Based education, where students and faculty practice the Transcendental Meditation® technique.

“I’m retiring with a deep sense of fulfillment and with gratitude for the growth that 25 years of coaching high school tennis has brought me,” Mr. Eyre said. “It has been a privilege to work with Maharishi School tennis players since 1988.”

Laurie Eyre will continue to work at Maharishi School as a mentor to new and continuing teachers.
