Spanish Soccer Player Studies Maharishi Vedic Science at MUM
Rubén Sánchez Yepes was a professional soccer player in Barcelona, Spain, when he came across a lecture given by Dr. Ashley Deans on Consciousness-BasedSM education. Immediately after meeting Dr. Deans, Rubén decided to come to MUM.
He enrolled in the fall of 2009 and after three months of ESL classes he began studying Maharishi Vedic ScienceSM. Rubén, who also practices the TM-Sidhi® program, finds that the Transcendental Meditation® technique brings balance and integration to his life and he is able to recover from challenging situations more quickly. “I want to be established in myself to be able to perform action; that’s the only way I can accomplish what I want,” he said.
Rubén is passionate about Consciousness-Based education and would like to be an educator. He wants to enable children to lead their lives established in the Self through developing their consciousness, and experience the same structure of education he is enjoying at MUM. “Once you apply this education model on the level of the state, for a whole country, you can really educate other areas of society and create a real change from within,” he said.
Last year, Rubén visited San Francisco’s Everett Middle School twice to talk about his experience with the TM program as an athlete and a student to children who participate in the Quiet Time/Transcendental Meditation program. The children were excited to practice soccer with a professional player and have him support their team in their tournament.
“Rubén is a natural, enlightened leader. He supported and motivated his classmates to try their best in class,” said Debbie Thompson, Assistant Professor of English as a Second Language. “He also sets very high standards of achievement for himself, and it becomes obvious to everyone around him that he is an outstanding individual.”
This year, Rubén received the Vernon Katz scholarship for international students for his leadership role as Cultural Committee President of the Global Student Council. Through various events and celebrations, his goal is to show students the power of cultural diversity as a means to unify people and help society grow towards greater happiness.
