MUM Graduates Win Awards for Feature Film Project

MUM graduates Geoff Boothby and Cullen Thomas won the Gold Eddy at the 2009 Cedar Rapids Independent Film Festival for their feature film Wormtooth Nation in the Student Long-Form category. The duo completed the movie in 2008 as their senior project for Mr. Boothby’s B.F.A. in Film and Video and Mr. Thomas’s B.A. in Communications and Media.

The film also won three top awards at the annual Iowa Motion Picture Awards in the categories of Screenplay-Produced, Directing-Long Form, and Original Music Score. In addition, the project received three Awards of Achievement for being nominated in the categories Entertainment-Long Form, Lighting Design, and Editing.

“Both Cullen and I are really proud to have made this film at MUM and to have it now be recognized,” said Mr. Boothby.

The film is also an official selection of the Iowa Independent Film Festival, which will take place in July.

Wormtooth Nation, a 90-minute film, tells the story of people living in an underground city searching for the surface but continually losing their memories. The movie features a large and talented cast, authentic locations suited to the “steampunk” genre, an intriguing plot, and a memorable score by MUM alumnus David J. Murphy.

In the Online Film & Video portion of the Webby Awards, the leading international award honoring excellence on the Internet, Wormtooth Nation was nominated in the categories Best Sound Design and Student Video.

“The Webby award nominations were the most exciting for us,” Mr. Boothby said; “the whole industry for filmmaking is moving onto the internet, so succeeding on the internet is the direction we want to be moving in.”

The Webby Awards receive over 10,000 entries in over 100 categories, and the entries go through two levels of judging, with only five entries nominated in each category.

Mr. Boothby and Mr. Thomas are currently working as producers at David Lynch Foundation Television.
