About the University

Other Consciousness-Based organizations and programs

Our university was founded in 1971 by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who began his teaching of the Transcendental Meditation technique in 1955, bringing it to light from the world’s oldest continuous tradition of knowledge, the Vedic tradition of India.

In the years since then, he has trained tens of thousands of teachers and has established teaching centers for the Transcendental Meditation program all over the world. He has brought to light many other aspects of Vedic knowledge, which are taking root all over the world.

As a student at Maharishi University of Management, you will no doubt hear a lot about these exciting activities. For example:

  • Consciousness-Based education — In addition to Maharishi University of Management, Maharishi has established schools and other educational institutions worldwide, with many thousands of students.
  • Natural medicine — Thousands of doctors have taken training in the Consciousness-Based approach to health care that Maharishi has developed, and this approach has received $25 million in research funding from the U.S. government's National Institutes of Health — with the resulting studies making headlines around the world. Maharishi Ayurveda Products International (MAPI) offers herbal formulas based on the traditional Vedic texts.
  • Architecture and city planning in accord with natural law — Many architects have been trained in the Vedic approach to architecture, and homes and office buildings have been built all over the world employing these precise principles for the health and well-being of everyone.
  • Vedic Organic Agriculture — Thousands of acres of land are in cultivation around the world using this approach that goes beyond traditional organic agriculture to enliven the plant's inner intelligence.

This enormous range of activity is sometimes referred to by the umbrella phrase “Maharishi's worldwide movement” — or “the movement,” for short. Many people are employed in these activities all around the globe and many others contribute their time and energy to help.

At the core of all these activities is the knowledge of how to transcend — the simple practice of Transcendental Meditation. And the simple goal of all these activities is enlightenment for every individual and invincibility and peace for the nation and world.

Although many students are naturally interested in helping with these initiatives after they graduate, students are free to do whatever they wish with their education — just as at any other college or university.

Whatever the case, by virtue of the students’ practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique, they will be developing their own potential as fast as possible and helping create peace for our world family.
