A wave knocks me over—
I scrape along the sandy floor,
shells gouge my knees,
salty water takes my breath.
Washed over by each succeeding wave,
I fall limp in the sand.
The ocean is too strong for me—then
a pause in the waves—and new breath comes.
The ocean lets go, a wave at a time.
I pull up, strength returns.
I stand and move, striding ashore,
salt water running down and away.
Safe on Mother Earth once more.
