Students in Vicki Alexander Herriott's Mediation and Negotiation class took top honors in the mediation tournament in November 2013.
Two teams from MUM participated in the 12th Annual Peacemaker's Invitational Mediation Tournament at the University of Wisconsin, Platteville, with Matt Rees winning the top mediator award in conference-style mediation and the team comprising Mr. Rees, Nicholas Coelho and Brando Piggue, came in second in the mediation category. The same team participated in the International Intercollegiate Meditation Tournament at Drake Law School in Des Moines, Iowa. Their team qualified for the semifinals and finished 13th out of 40 teams. Mr. Coelho took 4th place in the Individual Mediator category out of 120 mediators.
"It is a great opportunity for our students to participate in intercollegiate competition and practice the communication, negotiation and mediation skills we learn in class," said Ms. Herriott, who coached the students. "We are the smallest school to participate in the International tournament, but our presence is recognized. We have consistently placed in the top 10."
On the last week-end of the course, MUM hosted 14 teams for the 5th Annual Peacemaker's Invitational Mediation Tournament at Maharishi University of Management, Fairfield, Iowa. The team of Donna Jones and Elizabeth Fowler came in 4th in both the Client Advocate and Mediation categories.
The entire class attended the 5th Annual Congress of the International Academy of Dispute Resolution
, and had the opportunity to hear presentations and attend workshops with professional mediators. Students and practitioners from all over the world attended the two day conference at the Drake Law School in Des Moines, Iowa. Invitational tournaments are held around the country in preparation for the International Intercollegiate Tournament
. This year two teams from MUM participated in the invitational mediation tournament at the University of Wisconsin, Platteville, and Maharishi University of Management hosted an invitational mediation tournament in Fairfield, Iowa.
