The development of consciousness through the regular practice of the Transcendental Meditation
technique is a core value of the University and an integral component
of the academic program. Four decades of scientific research have shown
Transcendental Meditation to be highly beneficial to student success and
the promotion of campus harmony. For this reason all students are
required to practice Transcendental Meditation twice a day for twenty
minutes in the morning and afternoon.
At MUM, students help cultivate the total potential of their brain
physiology through the twice daily practice of the TM technique. We also
encourage students to practice the advanced TM-Sidhi program. These programs are the foundation of the University's Consciousness-Based education.
That is why all students are required to learn and practice the TM
technique or the TM and TM-Sidhi program while they are enrolled.
This daily practice has been incorporated into the curriculum as
Development of Consciousness courses. These courses include the
individual and group practice of the Transcendental Meditation and
TM-Sidhi programs as well as the supporting activities to maintain the
effortlessness of the practice and gain a deeper understanding of the
growth of consciousness. These courses are overseen by the faculty of
the Department of the Development of Consciousness. The Directors and
other Certified TM teachers are available to help students with any
questions they may have.
All students are automatically enrolled in these Development of
Consciousness (DC) courses whenever they are enrolled at the University.
Academic credit is given each semester for successful completion of
these courses, which is a requirement for continued enrollment and
graduation.
Along with university faculty, staff, and members of the community,
students attend group practice of these programs in the classroom or
meditation halls (for those practicing the Transcendental Meditation
technique), or in the Golden Domes of Pure Knowledge or other program
halls (for those practicing the TM-Sidhi program, including Yogic
Flying).
Through regular practice of the TM technique, research indicates
developed intelligence and creativity, learning ability, broader
comprehension while focusing sharply, along with the improved ability to
relate to others. The benefits experienced may include engaging in
activity feeling less tired and stressed, and enjoying increased
alertness and efficiency in the classroom and all areas of student life.
In the process of developing your potential each day, you will also be
participating in what we believe is the most powerful approach to
creating peace in the world.
For the personal benefit of all students, faculty, and staff, there
are specific policies that support each element of these technologies
for the development of consciousness. They have been carefully
structured to produce maximum benefit. In order to ensure for everyone
the integrity and effectiveness of the teaching and practice of these
technologies of Maharishi Vedic Science, they are practiced according to
the instruction of certified teachers recognized by MUM, and they are
practiced exclusive of other programs and procedures.
