Degree Requirements
- 56 credits of course work are required for the B.A. in Literature, as follows:
Required courses
- LIT 205 Introduction to Literature and Writing
- LIT 497 Literature Senior Thesis
- Plus 48 credits of literature courses (12 four-credit courses)
- In addition to the requirements above for the B.A. in Literature, students need to satisfy the general requirements for a bachelor’s degree.
Learning Outcomes
- Study a wide range of literatures in each of the major genres: the novel, the short story, poetry, drama, and literary non-fiction.
- Gain familiarity with all the literary periods from classical through the contemporary.
- Become familiar with various literary movements, such as Romanticism, Realism, Naturalism, Modernism, etc.
- Become familiar with literary theories from the Romantic age, where it all began, to the New Historicism and Post-Modernism.
- Discover how literature both influences and is influenced by the time and place of its creation.
- Discover the connections between literature, culture, and the indigenous arts.
- Discover how literary works express the moral and spiritual questions of their age and of any age.
- Learn to think outside one’s own age, to empathize with another time and another culture.
- Learn to approach a literary work as an active reader, as a co-creator of meaning.
- Learn the language and terminology of the literary discipline.
- Learn the elements of each genre, including plot, character, point-of-view, setting, structure, imagery, symbol, rhythm, meter, etc.
- Come to understand that meaning is a matter of interpretation.
- Learn to develop a thematically based literary topic and to explore its implications in a meaningful way.
- Develop the ability to write a sophisticated critical analysis. To master critical thinking and to apply it in all areas of the major.
- Learn to edit, revise, and document a literary analysis.
- Learn to conduct research both on the web and in the library, and document what you have discovered according to MLA Style.
- Master information literacy.
- Be able to apply Maharishi Vedic Science as a critical tool for interpreting a work of literature.
- Learn the aesthetic value, beauty, and power of language as the source of all literary endeavors.
- Learn to make public presentations on literary subjects.
