Research on the Transcendental Meditation Technique

Dr. William F. Sands

My main area of research is in locating the principles of Maharishi’s teaching in different branches of the Vedic Literature. I’ve done extensive research on the Valmiki Ramayan, connecting it with the concept of Dharma and with Maharishi’s Absolute Theory of Government, and have recently completed a book on Yoga Philosophy that explains Maharishi’s re-interpretation of key verses and expressions in the Bhagavad-Gita and  Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, which show how these texts reflect the ease and simplicity of the unfoldment of higher states of consciousness.

When not in the classroom, I can be found in the Center for Brain, Consciousness, and Cognition in Room 101 in Maharishi Veda Bhavan.  You will see me staring at mountains of EEG (brain wave) data looking for brain patterns that define high performance in athletes, managers or musicians; that characterize changes in brain functioning with practice of the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi programs; or that characterize the statement of enlightenment.

You will find the details of my research at the Center for Brain, Consciousness, and Cognition.  You can also go to my website drfredtravis.com

My main field of research is in studying the world's religious traditions in the light of Maharishi's Science and Technology of Consciousness. In the course of my research I have identified a number of core principles related to both understanding and experience that appear to be universal in nature, as they can be located in all the world's great wisdom traditions. These principles include insights into the following areas: the nature of what may be termed Ultimate Reality, the main purpose of human life, the ultimate cause of problems and suffering, the need for and path of transcendence, the development of higher states of consciousness, and the universal desire forand the possibility of creatingideal societies in a unified, peaceful, and prosperous
